About The Artwork

This work is an abstraction of Antarctic Ice melt inspired by archival imagery from the book 'Antarctic Resolution' as well as collected imagery from NASA's groundbreaking survey of ice thickness in the polar regions during Operation Icebridge (2009-2022). The work is meant to serve as a reminder of the fleeting nature of our existence on earth and the tumultuousness of our planet as the poles continue to shrink. Form and reflection are cornerstones of my work, as such natural light is an important element of that. The piece is covered with a gloss texture that contrasts the highly textured terrain surfaces. The glossy fields reflect natural light, the sky and the material surroundings of the work. As the sun changes position throughout the day natural light becomes part of the work itself as the painting changes form.

My work is born in the space that exists between imagination and reality. I create abstracted (often imagined) interpretations of natural landscapes that have been significantly impacted by human activity and climate change. Exploring the reality of the human condition and its relationship with our environment using the interplay of form, light, reflection and time. As natural light interacts with my work, the paintings become a dynamic entity, continually altering throughout the day as time moves on, mirroring the ever changing state of our world and ourselves. The unstatic nature of my paintings serves as a poignant reminder of the ever-shifting landscape of our planet and the fragile equilibrium we strive to maintain within it. Just as the earth undergoes tumultuous shifts, my work embodies the unstable nature of our existence. I explore themes of despair, self-reflection, longing, hope and our intricate, often fractious relationship with nature. Chance, a capricious yet powerful force, finds a sanctuary in my creative process. Embracing the unpredictability of random elements, I invite serendipity to guide my hand. As I surrender control to this dynamic force, my art reflects the beautiful imperfections and unpredictability that echo throughout the human experience. Water, an element beyond my direct control, often decides the end result of my work, and reminds us that there is a limitation to humanity's influence over our environment.
