About The Artwork

In lieu of recently ending February off with Black History Month and entering March with Women’s History Month, we finish off the final piece of the Soul Collection with a 2020’s roar. The subject of this painting is Josephine Baker- the iconic banana and bead symbol of the Jazz Era. Vogue described her “Danse Sauvage” as "radically redefined notions of race and gender through style and performance in a way that continues to echo throughout fashion and music today, from Prada to Beyonce."Joesphine used comedy and entertainment to facilitate Civil, Gender, and Women’s Rights. As an American, she found success in Paris due to the prominent segregation of her home country. Her activism went so far as to refuse performances for segregated audiences. Her belief in racial camaraderie was so true that she created the Rainbow Tribe where she adopted children from different ethnicities as her own and all lived together in Chateau des Milandes. This is a mixed disciplined acrylic painting. The subject herself is painted as graphic art with her headpiece and dress are done with scrape knife. Josephine’s complexion is painted in yellow referencing her infamous banana dance.
