THE BIG P is a portrait of Picasso. As an artist he's a tough act to follow. He had such an awareness and trust in his own ability to succeed with all he did creatively. I hope that comes across in my portrait of him. I draw faces because I love what they reveal. I love the capacity of the face to hold an infinite amount of expressions. I love attempting to capture a momentary individual essence and the character inherent in a well-lived face. I love how the act of drawing a face allows me to connect mind, body and emotion to reach something beyond what I expect or know. I had a revelation as I looked through photos of people’s faces. I saw how a face can change and at times be almost unrecognizable as a particular person depending on their mood and expression. It is amazing to me how much one's face is so greatly tied to an internal state. My first intent is not so much about achieving a likeness but more an authenticity of expression. THE BIG P is done with acrylic paint, charcoal and oil pastel on Bee Super Deluxe, archival quality heavyweight drawing paper.
