About The Artwork
The Birth of Pegasus is part of a body of work produced for a Masters research project regarding the role of mythology in fine art and how it can be used to explore gender identity. The work focuses on the dangers of childbirth through the lens of Medusa giving birth to Pegasus after her head is cut off by Perseus. The children conceived from Poseidon raping Medusa, Pegasus and Chrysaor, are born in the bloody aftermath of Medusa's death, symbolising the potential violence and bloodshed involved in creating life. The painting is on linen canvas, oil paint over an acrylic under-painting, with a matte varnish.
