About The Artwork

The Birth of Venus goddess of Love signed titled & dated 2015 also on the reverse with description of the artwork, Oil Pastel, collage, Brown Pastel Paper size Without the Frame is 26 1/8" x 20 1/8" inches. Venus a Powerful young woman. One of the goddesses behind Nature, her principle was the power of Instinct, Attraction & Repulsion, as expressed in the endless round of the seasons. In spring & summer she put on leaves & flowers, and she laid them aside in the autumn & winter. She drew beasts together to fight & mate in momentary passion. Among men she was the goddess not so much of love as of Sensuality & Pleasure. Young men and maidens prayed to her. As Mercury was the god of childhood, so Venus was the deity of youth, with all its passionate desires & hates. Good food, comfort & pleasure were her metier; deprivation & ugliness she abhorred. Her gifts to those who could control the venerean part of themselves were the powers of beauty, art and harmony. On Olympus she was regarded with caution. Wife of the ugly Vulcan, she brought trouble with her need for pleasure. When bored she was violent, indolent & self-indulgent, exhibiting the characteristics that appear in gifted but temperamental creators & in courtesans. Considered in astrology as the "lesser benefic" , she was a mix blessing. I have always Loved Sandro Botticelli Birth of Venus circa 1486 & so it has inspired me to do a Birth of Venus after Botticelli for myself i have changed a few things as you can see, I wanted my Venus to have wings and so i gave them to her, i never wanted it to look the same so i have created mine different she is Very Beautiful to me .
