Born: York 1973 Hometown: Bristol CageOne is an abstract painter and mural artist who’s artistic journey began aged 13, when he was introduced to graffiti art. Since the early days CageOne’s work has matured and evolved into a non-objective abstract style. The core of his work can be read as having a psychological quality, exploring a visual representation of the mind when it’s at its most vulnerable. He works with a range of mediums, building up layer to create depth and movement in each piece. ARTIST STATEMENT My work expresses an array of human emotions through a non-objective abstract style. I am fascinated by fear. My paintings reflect thoughts and feelings created by this emotion. The core of my work can be read as having a psychological quality, exploring visual representation of the mind while it’s at its most vulnerable. I mainly work with ink, oil an aerosol paint on my canvas work and household emulsion with aerosol on the walls, building up layers to create atmospheric work with depth and movement. My paintings are created to be defined by the viewer and to present the chance to explore human emotions in a visual form. ABOUT THE PROJECT I began this project in the early summer of 2013. I had been living in Bristol for the last 2 years and oftern saw the same names on the side buildings and street signs. I decided to look the people up to see what great things they had achieved for the city. I was amazed to find these people had strong links with the Transatlantic Slave Trade. It was then my research began. I was shocked at what I was reading and wondered why I had never being taught this in great detail at school. Afthen my research began. I was shocked at what I was reading and wondered why I had never being taught this in great detail at school. After all it is a huge and important part of our history. I decided to start work on a small number of paintings to put in a solo show. This soon grew as the subject Is far bigger than I could have imagined. The first part of the project will look at the ships that took the slaves from Africa to the caribbean, and their journeys.
