About The Artwork

This piece was inspired by a beautiful photograph of, and taken by, Vero Szafran. It's a sequel of sorts to another piece of mine which hung in a Brighton gallery last year. I wanted to show that the protagonist of the painting made it till morning and is going to be ok. The title itself is taken from a poem by Robert Herrick (Corinna’s Going a-Maying) and is about renewal, and that's what this painting is about. I really hope that people sympathise with the figure in the painting and can recognise that same feeling in themselves. I want for whoever looks at this painting to think about where they are and how they got there. Sometimes we need to take a look back and realise what we've been through and that we've made it out. We're stronger than we think.

Ryan is a Brighton & Hove based portrait artist who now works almost exclusively in oil paint. He completed a degree in Art & Design and Media Studies back in the late 90s. It was 2019 when he decided to put a 15-year career in publicity aside to once again feed his creativity and pick up a paint brush. His portraiture comes from a fascination with people and their emotional motivation, and he seeks to find the real person behind the face that we show to the world. Sometimes all it takes is a look in the eye or a slight curve of the mouth to capture the essence of a person and this is what drives his paintings. Through his work he seeks to find connection with people, hoping that they learn something about him and in turn learn something about themselves. “I’m not always interested in literal likeness when I paint a subject but in what gives a person their uniqueness. I love to paint something that brings joy to someone, and it really is my motivation to paint.” Ryan is a instinctive artist and buyer of art. If it makes him feel something he'll fall in love with it. His hope is that his work gives people that same visceral feeling. He works in his studio conveniently placed in the back garden, usually with his dog Daisy snoozing nearby.
