The Botanist Painting

'The Botanist' ( or 'Are the planets really biscuits!?' ) Acrylic paint on canvas Approx size 20 x 16 inches as printed on the stretcher The original inspiration was a painting by Adrian Ghenie. The idea then evolved in my mind over time. The landscape changed, the plants changed, the sky changed, the story changed, etc. One of Mr Ghenies foibles is to include a figure. Often the figure of Charles Darwin. This is one simularity between his painting and mine that remains, but my painting of Mr Darwin is not exclusive. The character in my painting could be read as anybody. To me the white shapes above 'his' head look like synapses and the whole thing looks like a 'Eureka' moment complete with a type of zappy electrical lightning bolt coming from above. My painting can be seen to tell a story - What is the character thinking? Is he having some kind of vision? Are the plants symbols of his 'world view'? Has he had a sudden 'jolt'? Is he recalling his life? Is he even 'in' the scene or is this all happening in his head? The story is left to the viewer to conjure. It is not a didactic painting. It is a work that can leave the viewer to their own interpretation. The plant in this work is Monstera Deliciosa ( Swiss Cheese plant ). More precisely the flower and seeds of the plant. Both male and female parts grow together, one wrapped in the other. They start like the white plant in the middle of the painting moving to the purple colour and ending with the green 'pod'.
