The Color of Fire Painting

The first in a series of surrealistic paintings that describe a kind of personal creation myth. This image came out of a number of self portraits that were painted on top of each other until the foal finally emerged. At the time, animals were not something I painted with any regularity, so I thought if I were to paint one, it should be a newborn (should I develop the idea further). The foal is born into a hostile world, burning at the edges, Blackthorn surrounding him. Beside the foal is a dark segmented space - it is not immediately apparent if this is a structure or a void or doorway, but it provides some solace.
