Social beings as we are, we inevitably have to suppress our individual will to some extent for organisations to operate. Co-operation demands compromise, and we all make these in our lives to some extent. But when organisations becomes too big, and their objectives diverge too far from those of the individuals within, the terms of the compromise can seem more like a Faustian pact.
