“The Doctor” Painting

This work was inspired by the collaboration paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol created during the early to mid 1980s. These works and the historical narratives of both artists are of great influence to me as an artist myself. The theme of this painting is the commercialization of medicine, which has become quite significant since the beginning of the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The hyper-commercialized period we now exist in very accurately reflects that of the late 1960s and 1970s when chemists such as Linus Pauling spewed of the “power” of vitamin intake. This painting references vintage advertisements and commercials for vitamins and medical paraphernalia, explored through the style of the two most prominent American artists to exist.
