About The Artwork

There is a Waterfall called The Dragon Gate where many carps gather in the basin hoping to climb the falls and that any that succed will turn into a dragon. The water plunges a hundread feet and there are predators in the sky taking advantage. For the strong currents and many dangers It is incredibly difficult for a carp to turn into a Dragon! Thousands try for many years and not a single carp makes it to the top. This painting is about both our fragility and our invincible spirit. A time of real struggle, a young woman braising herself, before the daunting climb that lies ahead.

When I think about my work, I find it difficult to define, but when I look back at all I have produced over the years, I can see that there is a fascination for human beings and a search for meaning in everyday life. I attribute this fascination to my childhood. I was eager to know what happens after we die and wondered about things that exist but for some reason we cannot see. This inspired my aunt to write a play for children called ‘El Muerto Todito’ (The Whole Death) which won first prize at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico. Her main character was called ‘Musi’ and was based on my curiosity about life after death. Being such a dreamer, it’s curious that I grew up to be a figurative painter and have such a strong focus on realism. However, my abstract work explores the mystery of the human mind with all our fears, questions, qualities and imperfections. I use abstract work as a way to map out emotions and conflicts. In that sense, human beings are at the centre of all my work.
