"The Flower Show" is a vibrant, engaging interior landscape oil painting that celebrates a collection of contrasts. Contemporary, bright colors with an electric-like energy are brought into an imaginary room where vintage furnishings are paired with a palette of exaggerated colors and oversized floral arrangements. The scene is reminiscent of a living room with many unexpected surprises. This starts with a large Victorian chair in bright gold and the two pillows in fuschia and turquoise waiting to support the next visitor. Brightly covered books rest a top a vintage suitcase by the foot of the chair referencing signs of travel. A steamer trunk is tucked away by the side providing a platform for the large oversized bouquet of yellow roses nestled in shades of luscious green. In the background, a large dining table in muted shades gives further context to the space to explore. There are a million stories that could be made from this scene. This is what captured my attention when I passed by it at the Philadelphia Flower Show this past March. I loved the creative use of color and texture and added some of my own to my interpretation during the process of painting. I also loved the artful play of contemporary color being used in the context of very traditional furnishings. This is a unique painting with lots of personality!

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
