The Gazeball’s Garden My wife’s kids got together to buy her a mosaic glass gazeball, a family treasure. It is perched atop a metal ring supported by the arms of three rust-stained, sheet metal faeries. It is surrounded by summer blooms including Cosmos, blanket flowers, and orange blooms from the wildflower packet that I sewed that spring. The blanket flowers in the left foreground are attended by bees mining for pollen. I worked from three photos that focused on elements at differing focal distances, here rendered into a single perspective. The large object at the upper right is a nascent Cosmo bud in extreme close-up, whose stem winds in and out of the right margin and whose fronds reach out to the gazeball. The faint outlines of the distant San Juan Mountains can be seen in the background. The sun strikes the upper left quadrant of the gazeball and its rays shine through the center to illuminate the bottom right. I used smooth 300lb paper. I applied vibrant hues in overlapping colors to the gazeball and then worked with sharp blades to expose layers and to ignite the light radiating from within. I detailed the gazeball almost to the level of individual mosaic pieces, picked out by scratched-in glints in the upper hemisphere and painted dark ridges below.

United States
I'm a retired communication professor pursuing a new avocation as a watercolor artist. In my travels across the United States and around the world I pause for a 4x6 color sketch whenever an inspirational moment takes hold and I have my portable art pack at hand. I revisit those moments at my home in western Colorado by producing finished miniatures with reference to digital snapshots I capture on location. I have been at this for over 25 years and have a collection of several hundred paintings of great works of nature and of humankind. The most striking images evolve into larger works that fill the walls of my studio, our home, and our outbuildings. I show my work in art exhibitions near my home and now online.
