About The Artwork

This is the painting that got me back into painting after a long long layoff. I described in my artist bio that I was (and still am) obsessed with judo. I would talk non-stop about a throw or a submission or a pin. Once I realized that my audience was not quite as into the subject matter as me, I decided to get out some paints and try painting a judo throw. I had not done a painting in a long long time. This painting is the result of that attempt, and ultimately what launched my passion for painting. What I discovered is that making art about things you love or love to do makes all the difference in the world. Previously I was 100% focused on learning technique without giving a whole lot of thought to composition or how meaningful the subject matter is. When I did the judo painting (the name of the throw is Uchi-Mata and "tori" - the thrower - is performing it from a left handed stance) I realized that making art is not just about having technique, it's about conveying emotions - sometimes emotions that are more complex than what one word or a handful of words can adequately communicate. This painting still makes me smile. Although my technique has improved over the years, my goal is always to catch this level of sincerity and emotion in a painting. This throw shows the thrill of winning by throwing your opponent. It also shows the helplessness one feels when being thrown. There is motion and the looming abrupt stop yet to come. I'm not so arrogant to say this is a great painting, it just means a lot to me personally because it was my first real experience with being truly inspired to create art. Now my obsession with painting is on par with judo.

I dabbled in painting 30 years ago in college. My dad (who is not a formal art teacher but is a fantastic painter and the best natural teacher I know) taught me all about technique and composition. Then... I took many years off as life happened. About 6 years ago I was completely obsessed with judo. All I wanted to talk about was judo. This throw, that submission - it was an obsession. So finally, after witnessing the glassy-eyed look from friends and family every time I took the conversation in that direction, I decided to channel that passion into painting. The subject: a judo throw. Left-handed uchi-mata to be specific. With digital photography, I was able to share my progress with my dad and solicit his advice even though we live 3 hours apart. It turned out pretty good for not having painted in so long and rekindled a shared interest with my dad. So I started doing paintings that were fueled by my different interests and passions. A boxing glove and a boxer, backpacking equipment, then my kids, my wife, anything meaningful to me. My passion for painting is now at least equal to my passion for judo. Two years ago I decided to combine interests again when I took my very first electric guitar, rebuilt it and painted my original artwork on it. It went from just collecting dust to being my main guitar that I play. It gets a lot of attention when I play out. I now have done many of these for customers wanting a unique instrument with original artwork. I am building and painting guitars and still painting on canvas and it all started from an unusual passion for judo.
