I 'culled' this image from a trophy hunting image which I discovered on social media. Cutting away the hunters, I re-narrated this image in a newly mythical composition. The magnificent Cheetah ritually dances with life in a litter of giant moth wings (which I have kept from a giant dead moth I found in a bush camp in South Africa!). The wings are scanned from the real objects and printed onto fine Japanese paper and delicately collaged. Some mythological birds circle above the Cheetah's head - a reference both to the circle of life as well a religious halo. With these narrations, I am celebrating the awesome beauty of these creatures which we need to protect and also raising awareness about hunting vs. conservation issues. I hope viewers will find this painting joyous and moving all at once.
I have been very influenced by traditional Chinese and Japanese watercolour techniques as well as the great influx of eastern contemporary art to Europe. I build layers and lakes of translucent watery pigment with wonderful Chinese ink brushes in an almost meditative way. The sense of movement is enhanced with the flicking and dripping of colours, the image looming out of the tinted lakes and the almost graffiti-like graphic marks creating definition of form and life.
This piece is a diptych, and so when hung, it is designed to be aligned one piece above the other, with a small 5cm gap between upper and lower framed pieces. I have used contemporary acrylic boxes to frame works in this format and style, and this looks very stylish and fresh in a contemporary interior.

Born in Surrey, UK but spent most of my life living & working in London and in Johannesburg, South Africa. My latest works focus on protecting and celebrating our beautiful biome and all who reside there and the equilibrium between nature and human imprint and impact. I make expressionistic and contemporary mixed media works which build up lakes and layers of translucent and luminous colour and texture. Calligraphic, graphitti-like marks create structure and space but also express emotion, motion and energy.
