About The Artwork

I just finished a series rich in the concept of women's lives on the prairie in the early 1900s. While nearing the end of this series, my mind traveled to the animals of the prairie--how the human/animal relationship is so similar in the sense that pioneer women were often the sole caretakers for the children while the men were out working. Animals have a similar maternal situation in that there may be one dominant male with numerous mates. Thus, the mother independently cares for the offspring. Horses are a beautiful example of this. Coupled with the warm colors of a late-summer landscape of Kansas, this sorrel horse mare and foal are a perfect symbol of the guardianship that cultivated life in the early 1900s for females of the Kansas prairie.
