About The Artwork

I selected The Honourable Jeff Kennett AC as my subject, not because of his illustrious political career, but because of his role as the founder of the national mental health advocacy group Beyond Blue. While Jeff and I are not simpatico in all of our views, we both strongly believe in dissolving the stigma associated with depression so that it can be treated like any other illness. His vision for an organisation mandated to support patients, carers, mentors, clinicians, and institutions has transformed the mental health industry in Australia and given people like me an avenue to seek help without prejudice or judgement. The portrait of Jeff is simplified yet detailed. I have chosen pokerwork as the medium as it produces a unique result. The burning etches the portrait into the timber creating a strong impression, and depending upon the position of the viewer it offers different experiences. It forces the audience to determine their own viewpoint to interpret the artwork. Like life, it is not until the audience takes a step back from the art that they can determine what the burning is all about, and therefore see the bigger picture more clearly.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Edward Trost has more than 30 years’ experience in the arts, working in a variety of media including ceramics, large scale sculpture, and animated feature films. In his portraiture, Trost renders his subject’s likeness as a collection of scorched tones, utilising a pyrographic technique to create individual burn marks on plywood. He selects subjects who have faced mental health challenges with inner strength and resilience. By highlighting recognisable people either actively working through depression or advocating on behalf of the community, Trost hopes his art will help to correct misconceptions about these debilitating illnesses.
