About The Artwork

I have always been fascinated by the untold story of abandoned homes that we find on the side of the road. They have been disposed of, abandoned by the owners, the family. I try to imagine who was born in the house, how many children were born in it. We live in a world where we dispose quickly of the old for newer versions without history. I have tried to give the homes a sense of belonging, a bit of love... I have been batiking for the last 15 years or so and still love it. Very time consuming but so rewarding to work with wax and watercolor paint. At the very end of the process there is always a surprise or two that keep me on my artistic toes!

Anna Rail was born and raised in a small fishing village called Pigeon Hill in northern New Brunswick, Canada. She now lives in Dieppe, NB. Anna has been working with watercolours since 2003 and discovered the art of watercolour batik on paper a few years later. Batik is a traditional Indonesian textile technique, but Anna practices it in a contemporary form on paper, which is different from the more formal styles. Anna prefers to work with Japanese paper due to its consistency, flexibility, and texture. The process of batik has taught her patience, and the end result is always worth it when the wax is removed and unplanned designs appear through the veined effect. Nature has always been a great source of inspiration for Anna, particularly the sea, wharves, fishing boats, and abandoned structures on the road. Her travels have led her to embrace a "whimsical" style that captures the essence of life without boundaries through flamboyant colours.
