About The Artwork
Dissociation describes a wide array of experiences from mild detachment from immediate surroundings to more severe detachment from physical and emotional experience. The major characteristic of all dissociative phenomena involves a detachment from reality, rather than a loss of reality as in psychosis. Dissociative experiences are further characterized by the varied maladaptive mental constructions of an individual's natural imaginative capacity. In mild cases, dissociation can be regarded as a coping mechanism or defense mechanisms in seeking to master, minimize or tolerate stress – including boredom or conflict and abuse. My desire is to use a simple line, a curve, a shadow to create the illusion of form and provoke emotion or thought, to bring a little joy or beauty, or to open a wound and create a little scar. Fascinated and inspired by the human figure in classical realism and extreme contrast. I am working primarily in oils, charcoal and graphite, and currently exploring techniques in black and white and muted color to create contemporary fine art.
