Painting, Oil on Canvas
Size: 60 W x 47 H x 0.8 D in
Each painting in this diptych is 47"x60". The elements of the Kidder Massacre narrative that are the most important to me are the lack of details surrounding the actual event and the importance of remaining a historian of the event instead of a partisan artist depicting one side or the other. It’s known that Chief Yellow Horse (Lakota) and Lyman Kidder were two vital members of this historical event, and both men were killed. The Lakota chief is depicted in most of my sketches, as well as Lieutenant Kidder. It was important to me to be historically accurate with the dress of these men. Kidder is depicted wearing the outfit he’s pictured wearing in his army photograph. He carries either a long saber-like-sword or a Colt pistol. Chief Yellow Horse is depicted in the sketches wearing a traditional highly-decorated buckskin war shirt like other Colorado territory Lakota men would have worn. Instead of a weapon, he carries a war shield which sometimes appears as a sun in the sketches. I have made the horses a very important element of this work—they’re a neutral, powerful element for two reactive parties attempting to kill and overpower one another.
