This painting is about looking back to when I was growing up and remembering how harsh the light was in the central Californian summers and the contrast to how dark people kept their homes in order to shield themselves from the heat.

The paintings and sculpture I make are autobiographical abstractions. I’ve adapted my work to focus on conveying a sense of tone about specific experiences in my life. What I am after, visually, is akin to how smell and taste trigger memory. I combine this ethos with a duality of existence that is personally inherent. When confronted with external forces like order vs. chaos, right vs. wrong, nature vs. progress, I use my work to try and find a sense of balance. As the world changes, my perspective shifts too and in uncertain times I think it’s helpful to remember how beautiful and complex life can be and I would like my art to reflect that.
