About The Artwork

Anyone who knows me understands that I like to keep things "light:" upbeat, positive, even humorous, if possible. It doesn't mean that I don't have a serious side; in fact, part of the reason why I tend toward easygoing is because I can take things way too seriously if given half a chance. Just ask my wife. She is well aware of what it's like to be around me when I'm overly serious. Feel free to question her as to which "version" of me she prefers to be around… When it comes to my art, I do my best work when I'm in a positive space mentally. As to what I create, I'm likewise looking to keep things light—while simultaneously looking to keep things dark! It's that dynamic between light and shadow in daylight or nighttime that introduces energy, interest, contrast and drama. Where they intersect is where the fun is. In exploring Saratoga Springs last summer, I came across a home that demonstrated exactly what I'm talking about. Here in "The Lighter Side," the corner of the building presented the opportunity for the two to co-exist at right angles to each other. The sky served as the perfect backdrop—the ultimate, restful contrast against the busy details of the structure. When I Iooked up, I saw everything I needed to see. And it helped me to lighten up. Hope it does the same for you.

born: 1958 Troy NY, USA David Arsenault was first captivated by art in 1970 when he discovered a reproduction of Edward Hopper's painting "Gas" in a grade school library book. However, it wasn't until the early 1990s--more than twenty years later--that a professor in his graphic arts program reintroduced him to Hopper's work and he decided to study painting. The early influence had it's effect on him to the degree that The Wall Street Journal wrote that "Some of Mr. Arsenault's paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper." He studied painting at the University at Albany (NY). Since 1993 when he first began showing, David has had or participated in well over one hundred fifty local, regional, and national exhibitions. He has shown in New York, Chicago, on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, throughout upstate New York, and now in Rockport, Massachusetts at his gallery, The Art of David Arsenault. His oil paintings, giclee prints, and reproductions are found in private and corporate collections around the world. Arsenault became a juried member of the Rockport Art Association in 2015. He and his wife relocated to the seaside town of Rockport, Massachusetts in November of 2014; in March of 2015 they opened The Art of David Arsenault Gallery; now in it's seventh year of existence, it resides at 8 Dock Square in the historic downtown Cultural District. His work is best known for large shapes, dramatic lighting, and strong color, which creates a compelling sense of mood, time, and place. Each piece presents a quiet exploration of everyday life. Arsenault strives to describe instants of shared human experience by expressing the transformational qualities of light, a sense of deeply personal encounters, and the elusive moment frozen in time.
