The Los Angeles Painting

This painting is of the most ornate theatre in Los Angeles, aptly named The Los Angeles. I have worked here as a restorationist over a few years and one thing that stands out about the building is the inclusion of the winged female form on the interior and the exterior. The building is made of white terracotta which glows brilliantly in the sun and casts heavy shadows within its ornament. This composition contains four architectural elements from the building. I felt like I accomplished a breakthrough with the crisp foreground in paint and ink and a foggy background that was drawn in bleach on the raw linen. This was the first time I really painted with the bleach and the addition of white acrylic to the surface creates an effect on the surface of the painting that shifts with light and viewing angle. Ink, bleach, acrylic, gold leaf, on linen. 48" x 36". This piece is painted in mixed media on a coarse weave linen ground, stretched over a wood panel. The variety of materials enhance and obscure the texture of the linen, much of which is left exposed, creating a unique surface that shifts in changing light. The linen wraps the edges of the panel. The subject of the work is the Los Angeles Theatre, on Broadway in downtown Los Angeles. Completed a year before the Depression, this opulent building never fulfilled its promise of luxury entertainment. But it is astounding!
