About The Artwork

The Mad Earl was a character I met while working as a deckhand on Tugboats in the 1970's. Never a more enigmatic person could you ever hope to meet. On dark stormy nights in the English Channel, in the eerie red glow of the wheelhouse, he would regale us with ghost stories and anecdotes to keep us all entertained. I once witnessed him in a packed Portsmouth dockyard pub push his way through the throng of helmeted, overall clad dockyard workers to the bar, where a particularly huge example of the aforementioned was awaiting service and blocking the bar. He tapped him on the helmet and said,' Expecting trouble?' seconds later, in the middle of a large group of these dockies, he was singing Sea chanties and Rugby songs, and everyone joined in, arms waiving and beer splashing. When I left Tugs, I often went back to some of our local dockside pubs in Poole, searching for him. Years later, I saw a framed black and white photo of him hanging in a Photographer's shop window and went in to ask how he'd come by such a picture. It turned out they were friends and he'd taken the candid shot on a Hasselblad camera as the drank and talked one night. I bought the print and it still hangs on my wall to this day. Fast forward again and I took a copy the image with me when I worked as a photographer on Cruise ships. I used this for inspiration and painted 'The Mad Earl' in my cabin, and years later again, showed it at an exhibition I was holding on Poole Quay. An old mate I used to work with on the Cruise ships had moved to my area and bought the original, But you can still get prints here if you like it.
