ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The Maw of the Day (dream no dreamer) (2024) - - - Oil and acrylic on canvas - - - 28.75w x 45.750h x 1.00 inches - - - **(shown framed for illustration purposes; piece is unframed) from: ‘The Headless Way’ Series A continuation of the idea that there’s no one there to tell you there’s no one there. Was looking at a lot of Francis Bacon while making this, and using his work as my muse to some extent, especially with the faces. This piece finished with the cat creature catching a blue something or other - I was listening to the song “Far from Any Road” by The Handsome Family and heard the lines: “When the last light warms the rocks And the rattlesnakes unfold Imagine cats will come to drag away your bones” and that was it. (“Imagine” is actually “Mountain” - just heard it as imagine. Full lyrics below - great song you should check it out.) _______ _______ FULL LYRICS From the dusty mesa Her looming shadow grows Hidden in the branches of the poison creosote She twines her spines up slowly Towards the boiling sun And when I touched her skin My fingers ran with blood In the hushing dusk under a swollen silver moon I came walking with the wind to watch the cactus bloom And strange hands halted me, the looming shadows danced I fell down to the thorny brush and felt the trembling hands When the last light warms the rocks And the rattlesnakes unfold Mountain cats will come to drag away your bones And rise with me forever Across the silent sand And the stars will be your eyes And the wind will be my hands _____________________ Signed: Yes - initials on front and full signature on back Hanging hardware attached: Yes Framed: No Certificate of Authenticity (COA) provided: Yes T H E A R T O F E V E R Y T H I N G - - - - - - - - - - - -

ART, LIKE LIFE, HAPPENS BY ACCIDENT. A whiff of control; some semblance of steering. And belief of a firm grip. But we're grasping at the air beneath our feet. The truth is: we don't hold anything. It comes in bits and bobs, dashes and jots - brief glimpses, spaces, sliding out of sight. For truth, is to feel it slip away. And then to try to create it. - - - Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, & often both, my art reflects the intersection between logic and intuition, real and abstract, time and the timeless. - - - - - - - - - Steven Tannenbaum grew up in New Jersey, where he learned how to garden and defend himself. He now lives in Portland, Oregon, and his art is in public & private collections across the US, Israel, and England. You can find more of his work at:
