The series The Most Important Job started as an exploration of the less pleasant and generally hidden sides of motherhood. Unavoidably, this led to an interest in the underappreciated experience of the child. While mothers are often seen as the tools of society, with the task to create the upstanding citizens of tomorrow, children are regarded as the raw materials of maternity. Like psychiatrist Alice Miller writes, childhood is inherently traumatic because of the extreme power imbalance between child and adult. Instead of treating children like unpredictable appendages, we should try to emphasize with their position. But at the same time, it is not possible to raise a child without damaging them. Now and then, children need to be forced to brush their teeth, get dressed and eat their vegetables. And maybe being powerless is a lesson we all need to learn sooner rather than later; for in even the most democratic of societies we are subjects to our government. On a deeper level, how much influence does rational thinking have on the decision to procreate in the first place? The drawings and oil paintings are based on stills from reality shows about parenting. The invasive camera crew provided the artist with intimate images of family life that otherwise stay hidden. But where television presents us with a clear sequence of a problem, an explanation and a solution, these artworks leave interpretation to the viewer.

In my art I explore paradoxical concepts like "choosing to believe", "introspection" and "giving meaning". In our secular, globalised world, it is no longer possible to just follow the rules and directions of your tribe. No one is born into a function or position that is not constantly questioned. How we can live a meaningful life in congruence with our big brain as well as our hungry bodies is a question I will never find the answer to, but that drives my work forward. A portrait I painted of my mother is currently on view in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (till 15th of September 2019).
