The Octopus Garden Painting

I became interested in the abstract shapes beneath the Sea, and how the currents create a dance between the life forms of the Ocean. I first paint a background with acrylic hues that gradient from dark to light, then I mask it off the background and cover it with masking tape and paint the masking tape. Then with a razor knife I cut our my shapes The tape foreground is dark where the background is light and cool where the where the background is warm which creates a push pull between negative and positive spaces. Since 2007 I have been exploring this push-pull theme utilizing one of Hans Hoffman's principals. There is slight texture created by leaving some of the masking tape on the Masonite. It has a surrealistic feel because of two Octopus shapes making reference to world beneath the Sea. This painting is framed and wired. It has a mate called The Whale and the Dolphin. Because of the reference to the aquatic world I feel this is not only abstract but surrealistic.
