The Onion Carver is inspired from a snapshot taken nearly 10 years ago. The boy in the picture stands determined, and by his own will and a little experience, prepared to take on the task of using an actual kitchen knife for one of the first times. He asks for his picture to be taken so he can show other family members his achievement even before the knife was discussed and handed over. Unseen is the step stool he used at that time to do the reaching and the helping an adaptation to the environment. What I hope is felt is the very human connection to experiencing negativity, working to understand it, and the will and determination to adapt and prepare for bigger and bigger tasks. He knows the onion could make him cry but also knows the swimming goggles helped him in the pool and may be just what he needs this day. This style is my first attempt towards a departure from, what I feel, was many previous attempts to overcomplicate the little glimpses of life we experience every day. The lists on the refrigerator behind him are of no importance to the memory of the event. The jars and cans are just added ingredients. The focus and the event are simply between the boy and the onion and how the two are destined to impact each other, positively or negatively.
