About The Artwork

This painting was created over a long period of time, adding layer upon layer. It is a meditation on life with some biographical aspects. When I was 12 years old, I had an experience, which has returned to me throughout my life. In the picture, I do not specifically paint the experience but I felt I needed to work with it in paint. When I started painting this picture, I had just read the book "The Owl of Minerva" by Gustav Regler and I was haunted by the quote from Hegel which gives the painting its title, as it does the book. It is a bitter irony that we can invent all kinds of rational meanings and interpretations of things after an event that we could not see in advance. In many ways, paintings have their own time spans and sometimes they almost seem to know in advance what they are going to become, before the painter does. It was so with this picture. I used different materials over a long period of time, including egg tempera and oil. I also used many different tools, and almost every kind of mark-making device such as palette knives, paint brushes and sandpaper. All the paint was hand made. The painting has an unusual surface, which does not photograph well. Perhaps more than most paintings, this one defies photography.
