About The Artwork

A beautiful specimen of Modernist architecture built between the two World Wars. It is situated at the foot of Mount Lycabettus, next to Hadrian’s Water Reservoir. For some years I frequented the bar directly opposite this building. The bar is no longer there. I must admit that I am a big fan of these types of housing projects that populated Athens around that time. Buildings like this one showed the first signs of modern, progressive and utilitarian thinking in Athenian society.

Stathis Petropoulos was born in Athens, Greece in 1972. From a young age he enjoyed spending time with anything that had to do with the creation of art. Drawing, painting and model-making where his favorite pastimes. After high school he attended the prestigious Art Center College of Design and then went on to get his degree in industrial design from Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. Straight after graduation, he moved to Los Angeles, California where he worked as a designer for two years and then moved back to Athens, Greece to complete his military duties. He then worked for a number of architecture firms, designing furniture and interiors. In 2002, with his brother Vassilis, he founded Vastdesign. The company dealt with the design, production and sales of furniture, lighting and ceramic products for the home. In 2012 Stathis turned his creative focus on illustration and began providing award winning work for the children’s publishing market. In February 2022, his debut picture book ‘Brown and Friends’ was published by Psichogios Publishing, one of Greece’s largest publishing houses. Parallel to his illustration projects Stathis is creating fine art paintings and drawings of landscapes, urban environments and still life, using mediums such as acrylics, oils, watercolors and gouache.
