About The Artwork

Round custom stretched canvas painting with textured acrylic paint application Up to about 1.5" thick Painting uses archival materials such as Golden Acrylic Paints and Golden Molding Paste and has been varnished with a mineral spirit based varnish for UVLS protection. This series is based on interpretations of the sky. I have used a vibrant bright orange as a background with a more tonal application of texture on the surface of the canvas. This piece evokes a stark contrast between the sky and clouds and yet a swirling relationship between the two. Painting wraps around the edges of the canvas - no framing required. Inspired by Frank Stella and the use of the tondo support for his work in the 1970's and well as Murakami's floral installations I saw in Versaille.

I produce large scale abstracted landscapes with a focus on the materiality of the paint to allude to emotion and feeling within the natural space. I reference landscapes from across Canada and create these works with brooms, palette knives and litres of paint on birch panels. My work has unique finishes and sheens varying from shiny to matte to indicate an intuitive feeling of a geographical element in the landscape. With textural elements, gestural marks, and rich color palettes, I embark on a journey of discovery with each work of art. I begin with a landscape reference and through the use of modern matte acrylics and added paste mediums, I move across the painting surface with an abstract expressionistic style. My work approaches landscapes with passion for connection and engagement with the senses using the physicality of paint and texture. For viewers, creating this window- oeuvre, engages senses, and reflection on place and our human relationship with landscape. I am inspired by the works of Georgia O’Keeffe, Lee Krasner, and Helen Frankenthaler and their love of the inherent beauty in landscape and in our connection as humans to finding our sense of place.
