About The Artwork

Provence, France with its magical lumiere has been the ideal haven for artists since almost two centuries. This large Mural Painting is my abstract interpretation of The Provencal Grand Canyon, "The Gorges du Verdon".. After arriving in 1991 in that glorious region my first trip was to visit the gorge to see for myself from the eastern ridge this stunning landscape. This scene so impressed me that it inspired me to do a large painting, twelve years went by before conditions permitted me to do it. That's the life of an artist. I had no intention of treating it figuratively, the principle form is true to the profile of this mountainous area but for the rest I let rip my imagination. It captures the spirit, of the dazzling light with using strong texture and the colour of that signifies the region. The painting is a polyptych consisting of 21 seperate canvases which in turn are attached to a back frame, (this is included in the sale), for the hanging. This method has the advantage of making it easy for transporting what is a large painting.. Medium: acrylic, oil on paper on jute canvas. SIZE: 6m50 x 2m20 Year Created: 2003

Rodney Salter Nationality: English Born: 02/08/1945: Birthplace: Ide nr Exeter, Devonshire, Now living: in France, Formation: Exeter College of Art (UK), London College of Printing (UK). Diplomas: Lithographic & Graphic Artist/Exeter & London College of Printing. Statement: Working principally in two distinct disciplines, painting and sculpting, both intellectually complementary, he succeeds in transmitting a spiritual analysis that touches our profound sensibilities. This is accomplished with a purity of line and simplicity of form, which transcends a wide range of textures and subtle balanced colours, always searching and aiming towards the light. This shows us at what point the artist attains the depths of the human soul. From his strength of expression flows a force and wisdom... At present living and working in the France. Having left his native England in 1991 to live and work at his studio, France He works in two parallel ways "Abstract Symbolism", and "Abstract". The theme "Human Emotions, evolving symbolically around our everyday lives. It contains what is fundamental to human existance, the family, our children and the people close to us. The oval being the symbol of expression par excellences, recuring incessantly in his work passing by a multitude of transformations. The form itself is metaphorical, representing the egg, the beginning of life. Portraying, the facets of human existence in this way, he gives us the keys to our imagination and emotions, "Throughout my life I have studied many techniques, not to become a specialist in one but to be able to realize my dreams"... www.rodneysalterart.com
