About The Artwork

This painting depicts a Sri Lankan Kandyan Chieftain wearing traditional Nilame costume in the foreground. These particular Nilame costumes were traditionally reserved for the aristocracy of the the central part of Sri Lanka. The red jackets had sometimes particularly large puffed sleeves and would have been decorated beautifully with detailed embroidery as this is. I have used some gold acrylic paint and metallic red and gold inks to attempt to convey the opulence of the attire. The photographs doesn't capture this but the sheen shows up in the right light. I've decided to set this in an olde world setting where the Chieftain in the foreground sits for his portrait whilst in the background there are members of his household visible. The woman on the left has come in from gathering flowers and looks curiously to her right. What are two people there talking about? Curiosity is a human emotion that transcends time and culture and wanted to depict that here. Her interest is caught not by the portrait painting but by what is going on further away. This painting tells a story of belonging and interconnectedness. We are all essentially very similar. This is a framed artwork painted on aluminium board in a floating frame made of American Ash. The frame itself ( made by Southern Buoy in Australia) is indented at the back with a ridge and does not have D Rings and a wire at the back. It is ready to hang. It will be sent with nails (if you wish to use these to hang on a wall). I've been able to hang these at home on hooks nailed in my wall as the painting frame ridged indent at the back sits comfortably in these. The dimensions provided are the framed dimensions (Approx12.7x12.7x1.3 inches).

Ayubowan!(means "may you have the gift of long life" in Sinhalese) My work is an expression of how I approach life – with curiosity and wonder. I’ve been drawing painting and writing all my life- my mother recalls me drawing on the floor with chalk when I was perhaps four or five and I remember writing bedtime stories for my younger brother when I was around nine years old. I admire the art of Hiroshige and Hokusai as well as Monet, Van Gogh, Mucha and Toulouse-Lautrec and these influences are apparent in my artwork. I like creating works that are bold yet restrained, dramatic but beautifully simple with a touch of playfulness or whimsy. I’m particularly fond of inks and several of my artworks on paper are ink drawings which have been in some instances coloured in using a very restrained palette. Drawing in ink and letting go of the quest for perfectionism as ink cannot be corrected is liberating. I also love life drawing and find using inks to sketch a life drawing helps me capture the essence of the moment. I draw inspiration from the world around me and my memories. I have lived on three different continents and am fortunate to have a rich and varied lived experience to draw on for my work. My wish with all my work is that you experience even for a moment some of the joy I felt whilst creating it
