Artist Statement – Erna Ucar The Room Series explores contemporary existence through the metaphor of the room. The room functions as a protective enclosure against the speed of metropolitan life, where stillness becomes a deliberate pause. More than a physical interior, it operates as a psychological threshold shaped by urban acceleration. The viewer is positioned as a temporary guest in a space that feels familiar yet remains distant. Within these rooms, the constantly connected individual encounters a rare condition: a moment of collective loneliness. Erna’s paintings are built upon a strong two-dimensional structure. Rich chromatic relationships, bold color fields associated with a Fauvist sensibility, and tactile textures intensify the visual and physical presence of the works. Through acrylic, graphite, and layered surfaces, she creates dense visual fields. Thus, The Room Series becomes not only something the viewer looks at, but a space they enter. Erna Ucar graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Hacettepe University in Ankara in 2001. Her design-based education informs her painting practice through a conscious balance between compositional precision and tactile textures. Having lived in Cyprus, Turkey, Russia, Malaysia, and Luxembourg, she observed recurring daily rhythms within hybrid cultural contexts. The contemporary individual stands at the center of her artistic inquiry.
