The Mayflower and the voyage made by the Pilgrim Fathers is embedded in both American and English history. Carefully researched this painting shows the final departure of that famous voyage. There had been a number of earlier departures from other English habours but each time the ship(s) had turned back. This was mostly due to the other ship that had originally also been chartered by the Pilgrims, the Speedwell, not being seaworthy. On 6th September 1620 in glorious weather, with a perfect wind strength and direction the voyage began. Although the Mayflower did later have to battle some strong Atlantic storms any further delays in leaving England could have meant the voyage being postponed until the following spring and it is considered that it might have been abandoned completely through lack of funds. Anyway you'll all be familiar with the rest of history, how many of you in USA can trace their ancestry back to the Pilgrim Fathers? This painting is offered ready to hang in a superb bespoke hand finished frame, specially coloured to compliment the sail colours in the painting. Exterior frame size 34 x 46 x 3 inches.

I have long been fascinated with painting water and nudes in water. I find the reflective properties, the movement and the distorting qualities of water provide me with a wealth of challenges. I find that although my aim is always to produce a high degree of realism in my paintings I am constantly using sequences of abstract shapes to achieve an effect. "Peter's work has been seen around the world. In his paintings reflections of both classical and modern interpretations can be found. With superb and interesting techniques he infuses a harmony between natural realism and the painted surface creating subtle yet dramatic imagery. Influences can be identified from many periods of art history. In particular the realism of the late nineteenth century and the photo-realism of the twentieth century."
