The Secret of Darwins Wartime Tunels Painting

Darwin was bombed during the course of the second World War. The fuel supplies of the town were seriously compromised, the fuel tunnels were built in secret with the view to safe guard the Town's fuel supply.They were commenced in 1942 and neared completion in 1944. They were never used to store fuel as the war ended before they were commissioned. The tunnels were reopened to the public in 1992 as part of the 50 year celebrations. I first visited the tunnels in 1995 and again in 2014. The tunnels really fascinated me and I commenced a series of eight paintings of the internal spaces and passages. The rust and detritus of the past immersed me in a fascinating world of dark colours ,imagining the fears the builders of the tunnels in this frightening but interesting episode of Darwin's wartime history. Five of the paintings are on view.
