About The Artwork

In this painting I use the canvas as a flat visualisation of a torus (donut shape). If you imagine the top of the canvas being rolled over to meet the bottom of the canvas this would make a tube. Then imagine turning both sides of the canvas towards each other so that the tube meets in a donut shape. There are seven distinct tiles and colours shown in the painting. These are all the same size but some join from top to bottom and some join left to right. Every tile touches every single other tile. This is a demonstration of the seven colour theorem from mathematics. The theorem states that if you have a torus and draw any imaginable shapes on it, the highest number of different colours that you will ever need to colour each shape so that the same colour never touches itself is seven.

Joe Eccles studied Fine Art at A-level and achieved full marks in the final exam. At University he studied Mathematics and kept up with painting in any spare time, linking maths with art in some cases by incorporating mathematical ideas and geometry into his work. Joe likes to make people think when they look at his art challenge his audience in some way. Whether this is through making the connection between the art and the mathematics behind it or by creating aesthetic discourse to be resolved. His usual medium is acrylic on canvas and he hand-makes wooden frames for some of his paintings. For Joe, Art gives him the opportunity to express something that is more than words. His art means different things to different people and he enjoys this aspect of an abstract subject matter. "I love the fact that everyone can have a different connection to the same painting and encourage people to give their own meaning to the art that I create."
