About The Artwork

Created during a period where I was responding to some diving experiences. Under the water it felt very surreal for me (maybe my O2 tank was low?!) but I totally immersed myself later in the memories and reactions that I felt when I was down there. The result is quite surreal, even abstracted beyond the actual shapes and colours, but very reminiscent of the wonder that I felt while cruising around the coral. Liquid media on polypropylene surface )yupo) gives very watercolour-type marks and as it has several layers of UV varnish, the artwork can be mounted(bonded) to board and framed without the need for glass.

Jennifer Webb, Artist in residence at Port Art in Melbourne, has been consistently painting Melbourne skylines, portraying various water views around Melbourne City since her nostalgic return from living outside of Australia. Seeing Melbourne through new eyes renewed her long-term endearment to the city as a source of inspiration in her paintings. Other subjects appear in her series, but throughout the recent years the skylines have dominated. She also makes travel studies of other cities as she is an avid traveller. In the most recent direction in this impressionistic series, her chosen theme (Melbourne skylines) still inspires but the scenes have been stripped back and reinterpreted into their most basic and essential abstract shapes. These studies in implied line, form and colour have very little of the figurative detail of her previous Melbourne paintings, but all of the textures, ambience and mood with hints of recognizable landmarks as subtle yet significant focal points. Other subjects continually developed in series include figures and the ocean, as well as other city skyline series.
