I was inspired by wintercolors and the shape of clouds. I wanted the shapes to be "fluffy" and the lower shapes to be "hard". Like the softness of snow and clouds and the sharp edges of ice and rocks. I also wanted movement in the painting which I created with lines of graphite and pastel. I titled ...

About the Artist

Irene Gronwall

Sweden

« "Painting and life is a process. So what of that experience do I hide, and what do I show in my paintings?"
I am a Swedish painter who has taken part in many solo and group exhibitions in my career. Originally an actor, I have been a professional artist for over 25 years. My interest in what lies beneath the surface is a continuous theme in my paintings. As an abstract artist, I paint in layers, subtracting and adding as need be. I mainly use acrylics, often employing different tools to obtain the effect I desire. I often use lines in my paintings for rhythm and to hold the composition together.

I want the viewer to use their emotions and become moved. Experience the painting - rather than "understand". That´s how I myself know when a painting is finished, it tells me something about myself, is true to me and I become moved.
I love color and I discipline myself sometime to use less color, in order to learn more about movement and rhythm. I often work in small series of two or three paintings.
I am inspired by American expressionism, Kline, Motherwell, Frankenthaler. I also love calligraphy.
I have my studio i Stockholm.
