(acrylic, latex, silicone oil on canvas) "The Smog in LA is Green/ Here it is Grey" is a sound painting in collaboration with a Los Angeles-based music producer and is part of a series entitled "Imbibe". The work was made using a sound system with touch-sensitive microphones that produced drum beats in response to the artist's movements. The piece was created in reaction to a soundtrack that depicted the life of a character living in the vibrant and chaotic city of Los Angeles after a period of addiction and turmoil. In making "The Smog in LA is Green/ Here it is Grey", Ella Jo Skinner was influenced by cloud structures in both the UK and Los Angeles. She was particularly drawn to how the smog in Los Angeles appears green, whilst in industrial cities such as Manchester it appears grey. She wrote several poems in response to this idea which will be sent in addition to this artwork upon purchase. This painting evokes a complex mix of emotions, reflecting the vibrancy and challenges of city life, the impact of addiction, and the environmental differences between locations. The incorporation of sound and movement enhances the immersive nature of the artwork.

Ella Skinner is a Welsh visual artist. Her unique, expressive work ranges from painting, sculpture, installation, sound, and performance. Her bold, textured approach to her paintings, which she creates using sound systems built at her studio in Manchester, UK, has attracted the likes of the seminal composer, Philip Glass. Her painting "Verde Nacht" was used for Glass's collaboration with orchestra Manchester Collective for their album "The Centre is Everywhere", released on Valgeir Sigurðsson’s label Bedroom Community in 2021 (Iceland, EU). The album was nominated for best newcomer at the BBC Music magazine awards. Skinner is best known for her provocative and bodily installations which merge different disciplines to achieve an art form that engages all six senses and provokes primal reactions within her audiences. She is interested in using art as a transformative experience to explore uncomfortable issues within the contemporary age. While studying for a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and History of Art at The University of Manchester (2016-2019), she began operating within DIY experimental scenes in the UK. Her immersion in the gritty world of harsh noise and the electronic rave scene led her to begin creating environments that challenged traditional conceptions of art, discipline and order. Skinner graduated with a Master in Fine Art in 2021 from Manchester School of Art.
