About The Artwork

This painting communicated its story to me while I forged ahead covering the canvas with neutral, natural colors and weatherbeaten marks and scratches. I made more free-flowing movements with my brush than I usually expect to bring to a piece. I was thinking about confinement, imagined or physically restrictive. I wanted to express a sense of history, longing, and waiting. It was a cold, white, frozen time of winter when I painted this, but dawn is muted pink and grey in almost any season. However, the canvas feels warm to me, dusty, grainy, gravelly. Light teal doorways, walls, sky. Abstract expressionist forms. For me, this was a breakaway from the traditional process as I watched and waited to feel spontaneous impulses to create shapes and free my sense of personal expression. I hope the viewer will find their own story in the piece.

The source of my creativity has been ever present during my entire life, an unstoppable energy and imagination that were used throughout my student days, and subsequent careers and always appeared through my approach to projects, problem-solving, and a long career working with books, literacy, and social justice in our prisons. I explored dark and light contrasts in art during the pandemic when my beloved work shut down and I found that painting in a crowded corner of unused space with a cheap, wobbly easel began to reignite my missing pieces. Through persistence, and by submerging myself in learning ways with color, balance, and movement of paint on the canvas, the self-doubt has quieted, and memories and the subconscious fuel my work. I want my work to excite, comfort, and be an enduring source of delight.
