The Stillness of Zero Painting

What is zero? Is it a beginning, or is it an ending? We just counted the moments down from the Old Year and brought in the New. Zero seems to be both the beginning, and the end. How do you look at zero? I read that in science, absolute zero is a state of extreme cold reached by removing all heat from a substance. Absolute zero would be achieved if all the molecules in a substance stopped moving. (Movement creates heat. No movement - no heat) But it’s impossible to stop all particle movement within a substance. Quantum mechanics says reaching absolute zero can’t be done. It is difficult for me to imagine no movement of any kind, utter stillness. I believe everything in the physical world is in constant motion. All matter is made of atoms with electrons moving around a nucleus. Even space is not empty of movement. It is filled with the wind of charged particles from the stars. Maybe the reason it is impossible for science to achieve absolute zero is because complete and perfect stillness is the property of God alone. I wanted to bring the feeling of stillness into my painting. By electing to use a very restricted and muted color palette to imply stillness, the scene becomes very passive. The stylized composition of an interior and exterior locked in converging angles creates a feeling that is empty of energy and devoid of movement. It’s a place for contemplation.
