About The Artwork

THE SUNSET WHICH CARAVAGGIO USED TO SEE is a sunset creation of Malta. The question is, "but what does Caravaggio has to do with all this?" Interestingly, in the 17th century, Caravaggio despite having achieved tremendous success in Rome and Naples, he spent a substantial period of time in the country of Malta. Caravaggio led a tumultuous life, and the circumstances which led him to the island of Malta were directly linked with this. Even though the circumstances of a brawl, and the killing of a young man (Ranuccio Tomassoni) remain mysterious, on 29 May 1606, Caravaggio is known to have caused his death, possibly unintentionally. After a few months from this episode, he left for Malta, which at the time was the headquarters of the Knights of Malta. Caravaggio, presumably hoped that the patronage of Alof de Wignacourt, Grand Master of the Knights, could help him secure a pardon for Tomassoni's death back in Italy. Having lived for a number of years in Malta, where he painted some of his major works, namely a huge Beheading of Saint John the Baptist (the only painting to which he put his signature), he had surely witnessed the most beautiful, and impressive sunsets that take place in this jewel of the Mediterranean Sea. 'THE SUNSET WHICH CARAVAGGIO USED TO SEE' painting is an original brand new masterpiece. It is freshly painted in an excellent condition. Thus, it is a 2017 creation. The painting's style consists of Realistic Impressionism. The media used are acrylic on smooth heavyweight pad. Hi everyone! I am from the island of Malta, officially known as the Republic of Malta. Like Italy, Austria, France, and Germany to name a few, Malta forms part of the European Union. Situated in the Southern region, Malta consists of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. It lies 80 km south of Italy, 284 km east of Tunisia, and 333 km north of Libya. The country covers just over 122 sq meters with a population of under 500,000, making it one of the world's smallest and most densely populated countries. Known for its characteristic warm climate, Malta is highly rich culturally, artistically, and historically.
