This original, plein air oil painting takes a semi-abstract and expressionist view of a spring magnolia tree. Soft and brilliant hues accent a palette of creamy whites in this small textured landscape painting. A beautiful light cobalt blue sky hovers above embracing nature as bold lines highlight the unique character of the tree and its delicate white flowers. Just below, clusters of yellow daffodils have emerged under an umbrella of filtered sunlight.

In creating this artwork, I was inspired by the white magnolia and it's curious trunk. The vista proposed an entertaining contrast of elements as I witnessed its delicate white flowers "floating" around a strong core. The vertical format for the painting seemed to appropriately allow for this expression and magnified how it felt to be embraced by the large flowering tree.

This is an expressive painting that is full of rich texture and visible brushwork suitable for many spaces within the home. The artwork is a piece that could be incorporated into both contemporary and traditional environments and hung either framed or unframed. This was painted on a gallery wrapped canvas and it is a signed original oil painting. The sides of the canvas have been finished so that it can be enjoyed as mentioned earlier either framed or unframed.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
