About The Artwork
This artwork was created for an exhibition titled Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder, which was exhibited in two gallery locations in New Brunswick, Canada. I chose an absence of color to mark the loss of the familiar I have experienced over the past decade of living internationally. The bittersweet reality of losing a sense of home continues to play a role in my life. Ultimately, I have come to realize the only home I will have is the one I create for myself. This painting is not intended to represent any image or thing. The title suggests a strong force that is pulling. The painting was created with a background of black and silver inks. The silver ink is metallic and reflects the light. In the foreground, there are thick strokes of black acrylic and tiny marks made of soft pastel. The effect is bold and organic. The edges of this canvas are a bright titanium white to showcase a stark contrast to the work.

Katrina Slade is an American artist working primarily in mixed media painting. Originally from Oregon, she is a third generation artist with a lifelong passion for creativity. Slade earned a BFA from Oregon State University, followed by a Master’s degree in Teaching. Her abstract work is typically inspired by concepts related to her affinity for mindfulness and emotion. Slade’s evolving style is influenced by her international experiences. World travel has been instrumental in her artistic growth. After spending seven years living and traveling abroad, she immigrated to Canada in 2018, and currently lives in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
