About The Artwork

Inspired by largest recorded wave surfed in 2020, over 70 ft tall in Nazare, Portugal. The young female surfer died on shore during first attempt in 2013 and was revived with CPR. Recovery took several years and she tackled 'The Wave' again and made it 7 years later. Dark pink line is first attempt in 2013 and light pink is second in 2020. Painting shows the experience from both inside the wave from surfer's perspective as well as onlookers view from shore. Exposed cross-section of rock represents the underwater topography and geology of the 1,000 foot cliff that leads to some of the largest waves in the world. Created on canvas with sand from Nazare. Painter visited the site in 2009.
