This series was inspired by a pilgrimage I made to India with a group of Buddhist monks and nuns in the fall of 2017. The trip was physically and mentally challenging and pushed me towards a place of surrender I had never experienced before because I could not revert to know patterns of comfort. In so many ways it took years for me to understand mentally what my body imprinted immediately and this body of work helped me come to terms and appreciate the journey. The Whole is Greater Than the Sum of It's Part B is half of a two part story that could be, but is not a diptych exploring this idea of self/non self. I believe we are greater together both as individuals fully in touch with our Yin and Yang energy and as a collective humanity. Of course it is impossible to capture such a thing, but as an artist I am still compelled to try.

I am a painter using primarily oil and acrylic paint. I also have a fascination with cold wax medium. While I love the experience of work in large scale, I also enjoy creating intimate textures through the use of layering and subtraction and using tools from the hardware store to create interesting surfaces. Being an artist brings me a lot of joy and tranquility that used to manifest as anxiety before I started painting. It allows me to connect and communicate with others in unique ways. It expresses the sublime that is under the context of spoken language. Art doesn’t recognize disability or borders and my studio is open and inclusive. In my personal practice and my work with others I give permission to play and explore the “what if” of a situation. At times I am engaged in a tug of war between control and surrender. It is how I process the chaos of the world around me and emotions that arise in a productive way. I have an art studio in San Diego where I create nearly every day. I have three young teenagers that challenge and inspire me to be the best version of me that I can and my spouse of 21 years is still on active duty in the U.S. Navy. I am a self-taught artist, having left the practice of law after a prolonged illness that lead me to my true calling. I too am a veteran and as a result of my experiences I have an interest in the arts as a healing modality. I owe a debt of gratitude to those who believed in me and guided on my path to professional artist and to those that collect my work.
