As I was making this painting, I considered it to be a portrait. Naturally, a dress is an inanimate object, but here I think of it as a presence...holding memories of being worn at a special event or perhaps the anticipation of being worn in the future. It is presented as a kind of tribute or monument, hanging on the wall and casting a shadow that almost becomes a second dress, like a memory. I toned the paper with a vibrant fluorescent pink that glows throughout the painting. The fabric of the dress is created with thick brushstrokes that echo the folds and drape of the fabric.
