About The Artwork

About Vladimir Kolov and his works. 2018 was for the painter from Khanty-Mansiysk Vladimir Kolov unusually generous for success and significant awards: after the gold medal at the Interregional exhibition "Big Urals" in Chelyabinsk, another award of the highest standard found its hero - a gold mark of the Union of Artists of Russia "Spirituality. Traditions. Mastery". However, this is not an accidental smile of fortune, but quite natural creative victory of the artist, who has, in addition to the undoubted talent and diligence, and such enviable traits of nature, as perseverance and exactingness to himself as a master. What works of 2018 became another creative success of Vladimir Kolov, resonated with the audience and led to such a high appreciation of the artist's merits in the development of domestic art? At the exhibition "Big Ural" painter Vladimir Kolov was represented by the triptych "Evening in the workshop", the landscape "Ice drift" and the composition "Clouds of the past day". The latter will be a participant in the All-Russian exhibition of 2019 in Moscow and deserves special attention. Her characters are an integral part of modern life and not only Russian life. Over the past few decades, there have been many people around the world for whom trash cans are the center of irresistible attraction - a kind of Klondike, for which there is a real struggle between clans of homeless people or just squalid people who have lost their sense of dignity and the meaning of life. This morbid fascination also occurs among the well-to-do urban dwellers, a kind of psychological cost of modern civilization. And all these people live next to us and even become an object for art. Vladimir Kolov has placed three of his characters in their natural situation: two enthusiastically studying the contents of the garbage can, the third patiently awaits his turn or has already filled his backpack. Their appearance, clothing and "accessories" are taken from real life, the artist has not invented or exaggerated anything. Figurative content is filled with details, color and the composition of the picture. In fact, we are faced with the motif of the "Three Ages": an old man and a middle-aged man in the trash, and next to smoke the young - quite decently dressed guy. As the saying goes, no one is immune... The action takes place in the foreground against the background of a dusky cityscape. The protagonists are separated from the backdrop by a wall of trash - an image of the wall between them and the world, albeit a cruel and unfriendly one, but still a big world, with plenty of possibilities. Who erected this wall and is it surmountable? It is not the author, but the viewer who asks these questions when encountering the painting. And no matter how much the artist denies the social aspect of his work, focusing on its formal, pictorial side, the content will inevitably play a decisive role in the perception and evaluation of the audience. The society is also reminded of itself by the name of the organization on the container responsible for garbage removal from the city, "Atlant" LLC, unobtrusively included in the pictorial fabric of the painting. It suggests a clear association with the Atlas, the courageous and powerful heroes of ancient myths, one of whom held the vault of heaven on his muscular shoulders. It is no coincidence that atlantes have become a classic architectural pillar, with which real men, protectors and breadwinners for the family, were compared. It is clear that the characters in the painting by Vladimir Kolov are very far from them, and do they even have families? But here is the deciphering of the abbreviation "OOO" - It makes us think sadly about our life in which nobody is responsible for anything and nobody owes anything to anybody. The three clouds in the painting, which gave it its name, are not simply details of the surrounding landscape, they are also a metaphor for a life free of obligations, empty, worthless and ephemeral. It is interesting that Vladimir Kolov's painting "Clouds of the Last Day", as well as his entire series "Men's Entertainment", fits into the framework of Russian postmodernism with its Urals variant, where the social aspect of the content plays a major role. Such features of postmodernism as narrative beginning, intrigue of the plot, strangeness and strangeness of the characters, elements of allegory and authorial irony, finally, the expressive texture of the painting surface, the beauty of the painting itself (precisely found color consonances and contrasts of warm and cold colors, light and dark, the well-adjusted rhythms of lines and the balance of spots) - all this is also inherent in the new painting by Vladimir Kolov "Clouds of Days gone By". And this modernity of sound, along with the skill of execution, made this work of the Ural painter a real event of the year and was appreciated by both the audience and the artistic community of Russia. The painting was purchased by the State Art Museum of Khanty-Mansiysk. Khanty-Mansiysk. And in 2019, the artist painted another version, changing the format and composition of the work. The work may be of interest to collectors and gallery owners. Svetlana Kulakova, art historian, member of the Association of Art Historians and the Union of Artists of Russia. Materials used: natural linen canvas on a stretcher. The wedged stretcher is made of Siberian pinewood. About the artist Vladimir Kolov (Vladimir Valentinovich Kolov, 1961) was born in Kurgan, Russia and graduated from the State Institute of Art in Krasnoyarsk, where he studied painting under renowned Russian artists Vladilen Kharlamov and Anatoly Znak. In recent years, Vladimir succeeded in many genres including still life, portraiture and genre art. His favorite motifs are evening and night lightning, unusual nature and space phenomena, provincial life and rhythms of the modern city. The unique ease and willfulness of Vladimir’s brushstrokes give a special texture to his paintings. Sometimes a thin layer on the easel reflects the smooth and gradual movements of the artist; whereas sometimes the painter’s short palette knife strokes create an effect like cooled magma. The artist says his creative method may be called associative realism as he doesn’t lose connection with nature while separating himself from it. Balancing on this edge, this unique artist is constantly changing, while preserving his individuality.
